Water Recreation
A short drive out of town can get you "away from it all". Victoria is ideal for
water recreation, three lakes just a short drive away and the Gulf of Mexico for salt water recreation is as close as 30 minutes away.
For family and water sports fun there's the Coleto Creek Reservoir. Located
just 14 miles southwest of Victoria, the Coleto Creek Reservoir features 3100 acres of freshwater and 190 miles of lakefront parkland. Fish for largemouth
bass, channel catfish or hybrid striped bass. There are boat ramps, lighted fishing pier, picnic areas and camping facilities. For Victorians looking to take the jet ski out for a few hours or
relax with the fishing pole, there's Saxet Lake Park. Just 2 miles south of Victoria, Saxet Lake Park offers fishing, swimming and picnic areas in a lovely 95 acre park setting.
For some of the greatest offshore salt water fishing in the United States, there's no place better than the Texas Gulf Coast. Whether you're a seasoned fisherman or just like to take the boat
out for a day of fun and relaxation, the Texas Gulf Coast is close and easy to get to. Popular fishing destinations include Port Lavaca, home of the "world's largest fishing pier". In less than
an hour, fisherman can launch their boats from Port O'Connor to take advantage of the great catches available in the bay. The Gulf side of Matagorda Island offers the best in fishing and
beach combing. If water recreation is what you are looking for, whether it be swimming, fishing, water sking, beach combing or picnics by the water, Victoria, Texas has what you want.
Bird Watching
The Texas Coastal Bend is one of the nations favorite bird watching areas. This area offers bird
watchers and nature enthusiasts not only one of the largest varieties of migrating birds but is also proud to be home to the whooping crane. Fall and spring are best times for bird watching
as migrating birds stop off in Victoria County and the surrounding counties. Even birds native to Mexico and other southern countries have some times been sighted in the Victoria region.
Golf Courses
Victoria's three golf courses keep busy year round. Riverside Golf Course, is open daily to the public and is a USGA member, the 27-hole course winds through beautiful Riverside Park.
Another USGA member course is the 18-hole semi-private course at Colony Creek. Colony Creek, Victoria's newest golf course, is also open daily. Lastly there is Victoria Country Club
Golf Course. This beautiful 18-hole course sits prominently on the northern side of Victoria Country Club. It offers members a clubhouse and pro shop and is open six days a week.
Membership is available at both Colony Creek and Victoria Country Club for interested parties.
Riverside Park
Want to plan a family picnic or just sit under the shady pecan trees and listen to the gentle
ripple of the water from the Guadalupe River? Then Riverside Park is the place you need to head to. Covering 562 acres of woodlands, Riverside Park sits on the beautiful Guadalupe River
and has something for everyone. Riverside Park boosts the largest golf course in the area. This 27-hole course is open daily to the public and is a USGA member. Riverside also offers
picturesque exercise trails, hiking areas, nature and jogging trails along with volleyball courts and baseball diamonds. For family enjoyment, there are lots of picnic areas Bar-B-Q pits and
playground equipment. Visit and stroll around the scenic rose garden, gazebo and duck pond or a trip to the Texas Zoo.
The Texas Zoo
Located in Riverside Park, the Texas Zoo is nicknamed the "National Zoo of Texas" by the
Texas Legislature, the Texas Zoo treats visitors to a wide array of animals indigenous to Texas. Currently the live collection has 108 species and a total of 240 animal species. These species
include a large number of birds, rep tiles and mammals. Many of these animals formerly existed in Texas, but are now seldom observed anywhere in the state. The pride of the Texas
Zoo is the near extint Red Wolf. The Texas Zoo is one of the few zoos in the United States to have a Red Wolf in it's collection of animals. In addition to the live animal collection, over 200
